Owls: Natural Disaster Models

We've enjoyed learning about natural disasters this term.  For home learning, we've been working hard to create amazing models of these events, many of which are interactive, and today we shared these with each other.  We spoke clearly and with confidence and practised whole body listening.

Peer Teaching in Maths

In maths today, some of our learners became teachers!  They've been working hard to revise and prepare for their own workshops and today some of these students taught others in the class.

The workshops offered included short division/bus stop revision, long division and an introduction to dividing fractions.  All of our student teachers did a fantastic job of gaining an understanding of their students' starting point and were able to adapt their teaching based on the feedback and insight they gained from their students.

It was a pleasure seeing them take such responsibility and leadership for their learning.  Congratulations to Zayaan, Farah, Hassan, Matthew, Vinuth and Omar.

"Today I learnt how to do bus stop division into the trillions.  Matthew was a really good teacher; he helped me which I got stuck and didn't act like a 'big head'.  He was really helpful and I enjoyed the student teacher workshop.  I'd like for it to happen every single week - it was good!" - Leo

"I really enjoyed doing the session today because I think it was really helpful.  The students were really good because they gave us hard stretch questions.  I think we should do these student workshops more often because I made good progress" - Aisyah

"Today at the beginning of the workshop, I'd forgotten how to use long division, so Vinuth told me all these tricks and I learnt that it's basically short division just writing all of your calcualtions down.  I made really good progress today!" - Rayan.

"Teaching was a pleasure today.  I taught Ryan and Charlie and it gave me practise with long division.  I gave them super, super stretch questions and challenged them.  They made great progress and will practise some more to get even better" - Vinuth

Learning about Percentages

Mr. Whitehouse's maths class have been conducting a question hunt to solve problems involving the calculation of percentages.
There are 10 questions with three levels of difficulty. Each member of the class is able to select the question of their choice based on how confident they are when tackling the problem.

Here are a selection of photos of the group solving and finding the questions and Rasha explains how she is now more confident when solving percentage problems and gives some tips.

Progress in Art!

"Today we learned about how to draw the body in the correct shape and how to make them do positions.  We also explained the body parts and where they joined.  We drew the bodies in parts and learned that a body is 7.5 heads high.  I think my drawing has improved because last time was the first time I drew but this time I had the experience of it and used what I had learnt so it was better."
- Walid

Can you see the progress we've made?

Art: People in Motion - Our Starting Point

In art we're about to start learning how to draw people in motion.  These were out initial draws where we focused on the form of the body, paying particular attention to the proportions and points of movement.

How do you think we did?  Stay tuned to follow our progress!

Genius Hour

"I think Genuis Hour is a really fun way to learn about something that you're interested in. There's so much to know!" - Louise (Owls)

"It's fun and amazing! We can do things that we like, like art. We get to choose what we learn and we are our own teachers. As a group, we decide what we do using the Learning Process and then we use things like the iPads and computers to help us" - Enoch and Daniel

"We like how we can choose the topic and we can research about it ourselves. Genius hour is where students can be more free; the walls of the knowledge room are taken away! We love learning about what we want to do." - Lucy, Zoha and Tanuli (Owls)

Myth: Amun Ra, the Sun and the Moon by Farah

Hello everyone!

This is Farah and today I decided to post my myth which I really hope you enjoy. My myth is based on another myth but it has a lot of changes!

It would be AMAZING if you would comment and tell me what you thought about my story  :) Here it goes...

Long, long ago in the sandy landscape of Ancient Egypt there lived a young man named Amun Ra. He wasn't poor yet he wasn't rich. He lived with his wonderful, caring mother. Unfortunately, he lost his father while he courageously fought for his great country. Since then, Amun Ra and his mother have been awfully devastated. Amun Ra was the shop-keeper of a small shop that sold lots of absolutely, delicious fruit. Amun Ra was trying to make his father proud by still working at the shop. The shop's name was 'The Golden Tree'.

One day The Sun wasn't as bright as usual, the people figured out that it was The Moon's fault, it didn't go down when The Sun came up to start a new day. As the days passed by, or should I say the semi-days passed by, The Sun got more and more fed up. The Sun decided that it needed some help. The Sun announced to all the villages in Egypt. "The Moon has been selfish and ungrateful by not going down when I come up, and I hope that a brave, young man will be able to help me." Everyone ignored The Sun except Amun Ra, he believed that he could trick the moon and that things could go back to normal. Amun Ra was prepared for all the trouble that will soon be coming his way.

"Why?!" Exclaimed The Sun, "Why would you do such a thing to all these innocent people?'' The Moon paused. It was as if time was frozen and the sun was the only thing moving or even breathing at all. "Look at me when I am talking to you!" The Sun shouted this time. The Moon turned around and moved away from the sun. "Amun Ra, please help me, The Moon keeps ignoring me and nothing got any better!" The Sun told Amun Ra. "It might have actually gotten worst."
''Do not worry I will fix everything, sooner or later," Amun Ra assured The Sun.

On a brand new day, as The Sun started to come up on the horizon in the far distance, The Moon stood there with the biggest smile on his face. He was so proud of himself for being in the middle of the sky for 10 days. "Why are you not going down?" Amun Ra asked The Moon.
The Moon looked down at Amun Ra and said, "Because The Sun is bigger than me and it always gets more time in the sky than I do! It has 14 hours in the sky and I only have six hours''
"What you're doing doesn't benefit anyone," explained Amun Ra...
The Moon felt guilty and evil, "I'm sorry for all the trouble that I have caused it will not happen ever again," The Sun was very proud of Amun Ra, Amun Ra wanted to know if his father was too. As a reward The Sun gave Amun Ra the power to control fire, light and the power to bring people back from the dead. Now that he had that power he wanted to bring his father back to life. When he did do it his mother was the happiest he had ever seen her. The days turned back as they used to be and everyone as happy again.

One great day Amun Ra was going to the shoe market then he bumped into a gorgeous girl. Her beauty was blinding. Amun Ra instantly fell in love with her. "What is your name?" asked Amun Ra, "You are very pretty,"
"Thank you," she said "Hello my name is Iris''
"My name is Amun Ra!" he exclaimed. She told him that she already knew him because he was the one who stopped The Moon from changing the days forever. Four years later, they joyfully got married and lived their lives together for ever and ever...

Can you work out what Zoha's poem is about?

What a fantastic example of a kenning!

I spotted this video tonight and thought you might enjoy watching it.

Can you figure out what country this story is set in?  What clues did you use?

Poetry: Intro to Kennings

This week we're taking a look at kennings, a traditional Icelandic poem.  Today we learnt what a kenning is and in groups, had a go at creating our own.

Can you work out what creatures each group wrote about?
