Year 6 Champions League Champions!

Earlier this term each class appointed 'football reps' to form the 'football committee' of the Year 6 Champions League. This committee helped to manage the first tournament in Year 6 by registering players, creating mixed ability teams, refereeing matches and updating the league table.

After nearly four weeks of competition - over both break and lunch times - between our 8 Champions League teams, I'm pleased to announce that Manchester City (see picture below) came out on top! Congratulations!!

A big well done must also go to all of the 70+ players who took part for showing great maturity, respect and teamwork both on and off the pitch. Now our second competition has kicked off this week, lets build on our success and make sport a happy part of our school life.

Music Emotionally by Eleanor

When I sit down at the Piano, we become one. It's like talking to someone who understands how you are feeling when no-one else can. You can get rid of your worries and just relax, like hypnotism but you are fully aware of the emotions flooding through your body. I guess you could almost fall asleep when you just feel as relaxed as when you reach heaven! (Well nearly) It is the same for my other instrument - the Violin. Some people would call the Violin screechy when someone is fist learning and when you make a mistake. It is a truly beautiful sounding instrument but you just need practice like every other single instrument. When I play the Violin, we learn together and we feel the music emotionally. Swaying and facial expressions is how we show the world that we really enjoy how we feel right now in this exact moment in time. Well - not now but that is what we do. And I know it sounds weird to call a Violin and I 'we' but again, like the Piano, we become one.

This is why, if you ever play an instrument, you should really feel yourself when you play anything, whichever emotion you are feeling. If you are feeling plain, you need to get into the piece you are playing, lullaby, adventurous, suspenseful or angry, it doesn't matter which. Going to concerts are inspiring because the trained players really feel the tune, not one of them have a plain expression. (If they have no sign of emotion, then obviously aren't a proper player!)

Enough of the sad playing! When I am playing a happy piece, when I feel like it, I am not whole with the Piano. It's a bit like playing with your friends when you are a child, but if you're not a child then it's however you feel happy the most! You get into the mood so much that you can move and jump and show it through your smiling face.

Maori Myths

Today we enjoyed watching and listening to a variety of myths and legends from around the world.

Here are some New Zealand Maori myths - what do you think makes these myths rather than legends?

Geotagging in ICT

In ICT we've been learning about metadata and geotagging photos - we now know that most photographs carry data that we can't see, telling us about the details of the photograph.  This location data relates back to co-ordinates and using GPS, can be used to tell us exactly where photos are taken.

This is us snapping photos to then collect the metadata!

Wrapping up Survival Week

Survival week is just about over and we're sad to see it go!  We've had so much fun testing our teamwork and learning new things outside of the classroom.

Some of us reflected on our semaphore experience today - hear what we thought below...

Dear Diary by Skye

8.11.16
Dear Diary,

These past two days have been great,in fact they have been more than great they have been amazing! Yesterday it may have been fun but it was terrifying; a tsunami hit. It was tense. My group spent all of our money ,hoping for the best, trying to make deals and upgrade the houses but housing 645 people was a whole new level. We didn't have a lot of time. Was twenty-five minutes enough? I could have just stayed at home sat on the couch and glued my eyes to my iPad . I couldn't do that I thought the activities would be fun and full of action, don't get me wrong it was but it was also dangerous…

The alarm was as loud as a teenagers music blasting so they could hear it whilst they were in the shower. It was happening, we had two more minutes to do what we could to save the people of the village. People evacuated to the city center where they would be safer, the city center staff had been trained for an emergency like that one. Sweat was running down my spine;I couldn't look. The buildings were falling like rockets rushing to the moon as the wave hit them, 15 people dead and 315 injured. The water swallowed the soles of a lot of people. I failed . I clicked the reset button to see if I could get more points than before.

9.11.16

Dear Diary,

Then we did another activity, it was terribly hard;we had to make a solar still, a solar still is made to purify water, but there was a twist we didn’t have all the right resources; The correct ingredients were some sort of vegetation, dirty salty water, a cup and a large piece of plastic sheet but we only had glitter, tap water, blue tac, salt, a pencil container, masking tape and cling film.It was tricky. It was that wednesday I wished I stayed at home curled up in bed the quilt covers swallowing me up, lying there like a dead person in their coffin. There was only 30 minutes to finish the activity. My survival group and I used paper as our choice of vegetation then we added the water, salt and glitter, we then added the pencil pot as a cup to catch the water. That took all the groups about fifteen to twenty minutes which meant there wasn’t a lot of time to get the cling wrap secured with masking tape then put the big ball of blue tac in the middle or so that wherever you cup is there will be a slope to catch the water.

At the end of all that nobody could get any points because our substitute told us to use paper as leafs and when we were sitting on the mat that our actual teacher the amazing, awesome and adventurous Mrs Chant told us something that we already knew;paper absorbs water,I guess we were all just to excited to get it done we didn’t even realise.

If you would like to see Skye's feedback or leave her some specific comments, you can do so here.

Teaching Each Other in Year 6

Recently I helped 3 of my friends in my maths class with their work.

They were struggling with long division so I offered some help. They felt much more confident after that and it made me feel really happy and proud. It didn’t only help them it also really helped me because while they were asking me questions I had to think of it from different perspectives and it made me feel even more confident.

When did you last learn by helping someone else?

Sewing Fun in Year 6

Today we had a great time applying what we have learnt about sewing by creating our disaster vests.

For some of us, it was a chance to practice our skills whilst others made great progress in their understanding of the practical side of sewing.

A huge thank you to all of the parents and helpers that came in to join us - it was lovely to have you along!
